Learning Goals In Class:

  1. Debate what criteria someone should use in determining which jobs promote a good life.
  2. Understand Aristotelian and Catholic ideas about the functions of work and leisure in the good life; debate whether these ideas are relevant to our work/life circumstances.
  3. Apply philosophical analysis and argumentation to offer advice for a business leader dealing with a crisis. 
  4. Identify philosophical principles that will guide your own philosophy of work.

Individual Prep Questions for Work With Integrity:

How does Josef Pieper define “leisure”?  What is one activity you engage in that would count as leisure for Pieper?  What is one activity that many people think is Leisure but Pieper would disagree?  Why is leisure so important to the good life on his theory?

Find one piece of career advice that is common around Notre Dame (either from the career center or from advice other students give).  Write it down here.  Do you find this advice philosophically defensible?  Why or why not. In your analysis, discuss at least one philosophical idea from the readings today.
