Learning Goals In Class:

  1. Discuss the Argument from Evil and the longstanding debate over its soundness.
  2. Identify different theist strategies for responding to the Argument from Evil, and consider whether they are successful.
  3. Using ideas we have explored thus far in the course, develop your own “food for the journey” approach – philosophical resources that you believe will be helpful when you encounter suffering.

Struggle with Suffering Individual Prep Questions:

Consider the defenses for the problem of evil discussed in TGLM. What is one potential defense for God’s existence in light of the New London School explosion?  Do you think it would be good to share that defense with one of the survivors interviewed?  Why or why not?

Look up one passage from Jewish, Christian or Muslim scripture that discusses the meaning of human suffering. (Even better – ask your rector for help finding a passage!) Jot it down here, along with your notes about what it means.  Bring it to class.
