  • Answer Individual Prep Questions

Learning Goals In Class:

  1. Discuss ways in which consequentialism, virtue ethics, and nihilism shape our views about the badness of death.
  2. Analyze Socrates’s constructive dilemma about the badness of death.
  3. Analyze the Epicurean symmetry argument about the badness of death.
  4. Reflect on how the reality of death shapes our views about the nature of Eudaimonia.

Prepare for Death Individual Prep Questions

What is Socrates’s goal with regards to how he feels about death?  What is his argument for this goal?  Try to reconstruct it as straightforwardly as you can in premise-conclusion form.

What do you hope happens after you die?  If you hope for an afterlife, what is it like?  If you hope death is the end of the good life, why?  Describe your hope in some detail.

What do you think your answer to #2 above suggests about what you value most in your life now?
