Before Class:

Learning Goals In Class:

  1. Understand Aristotle’s theory of friendship and the good life, including his distinctions among types of morally significant friends.
  2. Debate whether love of strangers is morally possible.
  3. Consider four philosophically significant features of the Parable of the Good Samaritan.
  4. Practice incorporating philosophical passages and commentary into Apology sections.

Love Attentively Individual Prep Questions:

Using a short passage from either Aristotle or the Gospel of Luke, give advice to the New York Times reader who has written into the “Ask the Ethicist”.  Write your answer as a direct reply to the letter writer.  Be sure to have a clear philosophical argument for your advice, though it need not be in premise-conclusion form.
