In an influential essay, the philosopher Josef Pieper claims that we in modern Western society have come to inhabit a “world of total work.” In recent years, the devastating effects this has had, on individuals and our culture as a whole, have become clear. Burnout, success addiction, and quiet-quitting are all symptomatic reactions to living in what Byung Chul Han has dubbed an “achievement society.” But how can we possibly respond? Today we will set the stage for this discussion.
